WORDS OF WISDOM

Jonah 4 (The Message)

“I Knew This Was Going to Happen!”

1-2 Jonah was furious. He lost his temper. He yelled at God, “God! I knew it—when I was back home, I knew this was going to happen! That’s why I ran off to Tarshish! I knew you were sheer grace and mercy, not easily angered, rich in love, and ready at the drop of a hat to turn your plans of punishment into a program of forgiveness!

3“So, God, if you won’t kill them, kill me! I’m better off dead!”

4God said, “What do you have to be angry about?”

5But Jonah just left. He went out of the city to the east and sat down in a sulk. He put together a makeshift shelter of leafy branches and sat there in the shade to see what would happen to the city.

6God arranged for a broad-leafed tree to spring up. It grew over Jonah to cool him off and get him out of his angry sulk. Jonah was pleased and enjoyed the shade. Life was looking up.

7-8But then God sent a worm. By dawn of the next day, the worm had bored into the shade tree and it withered away. The sun came up and God sent a hot, blistering wind from the east. The sun beat down on Jonah’s head and he started to faint. He prayed to die: “I’m better off dead!”

9Then God said to Jonah, “What right do you have to get angry about this shade tree?”

Jonah said, “Plenty of right. It’s made me angry enough to die!”

10-11God said, “What’s this? How is it that you can change your feelings from pleasure to anger overnight about a mere shade tree that you did nothing to get? You neither planted nor watered it. It grew up one night and died the next night. So, why can’t I likewise change what I feel about Nineveh from anger to pleasure, this big city of more than 120,000 childlike people who don’t yet know right from wrong, to say nothing of all the innocent animals?”

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

I play some of Iron Maiden’s song “Number of the Beast” as an intro to the subject – “666 The Number of the Beast”

I was fascinated by spiritual things.  Dark things were cool to me.

I talk about the origin of Lucifer and his role in Heaven and Hell.

We talk about Lucifer being and Archangel along with Michael and Gabriel.

We do some mythbusting.

Names:  Satan, the Devil, Lucifer, Beelzubob, The Serpent, Slug, the unholy one, etc.

Authority on who the devil is.  What do we trust?
I was fascinated by the whole idea of dark power and secret magic.

Books on the Devil include a HUGE amount of information, but really in my opinion the only true authority on the Devil is the Bible.

Origin of the Devil.

Lucifer was an Arch Angel, there were two other Arch Angels that we know of mentioned in the Bible.  Gabriel and Michael are their names.  Each one of the Arch Angels have a specific job description and have angels under their juristiction.

Through reading the Bible we can piece together a pretty good picture of what happened.

Angels are eternal beings- actually all of are, but for this podcast we are talking about Lucifer.

His main job as an Arch Angel was to play music and bring honor and glory to Father God.  The Bible actually talks about the way that Lucifer was created.  It says that he had pipes, like you find in an organ, drums, and instruments and was beautifully adorned with precious stones.  His entire being was geared toward glorifying and bringing attention to God.  He was given the abilities of music, persuasion and talent to do just that.

Here is where things started going south.  No pun intended.

The Bible says that one day he got to looking at himself-  he felt that he was something else!  He felt he was beautiful, and made a huge lap in judgement when he felt that he could do better than God was doing with Heaven.

The Bible says that he exhalted himself above God and attempted to overthrow Heaven with a third of the Angels, most assume these were the angels under his command. No one knows how many of them there are, but most theologians believe that they are what we know as demons now.  Angels that have for a lack of better words “gone to the dark side”  🙂

We then find that Lucifer was banished by God from Heaven and was exiled to the planet Earth for a certain period of time.  He is allowed to interact with God’s creation, mankind.   Adam and Eve are warned, but do not heed the information.  Adam was told to “guard and keep garden” but he doesn’t, and that is why we have the account of the “Serpent” in the Bible, who tempts Eve to eat of the fruit she was commanded NOT to eat from.    People all blame Eve for the fall of man, but in truth, the very next verse in Genesis says that she turns to Adam and he eats too.  So they both blew it, and were taken in by the persuasion of satan.

As we read in the book of Revelation and other places in the Bible we find that he doesn’t take this well and winds up trying to wreak havoc on Earth, with emphasis on getting back at human beings for being close to God.

The bible says that he has only a certain amount of time on the Earth, and because his time is short he plans on making it miserable for people, thus the pain and suffering and godless attempts at removing Jesus from picture.

His greatest triumph, he thought, was the trickery of Adam and Eve, and the supposed killing of Jesus Christ, the son of God.

Of course he overplayed his hand.

One shot the entire human race into “sin”  and the other redeemed them from it.

He is not dumb, he is crafty with the power of deception and persuasion.  He uses the same old vices to tempt and lead people astray….

Money, Sex and Power–  he has specifically targeted the entertainment industry because of it’s mass appeal and worship potential.

The Devil is the ultimate sociaopath and narcisist.

We do find that in the end, according to the bible, Satan is thrown into the lake of fire, and ultimately suffers in Hell for eternity along with all those who have not recieved the gift of salvation offered through Jesus Christ.   People were never meant for hell- the bible says it was reserved for the devil and all his angels (demons)
Here are some Biblical references to all that I talked about on the podcast.

 I play the Stryper Song

 “To Hell with the Devil”

Speak of the devil
He’s no friend of mine
To turn from him is what we have in mind

Just a liar and a thief
The word tells us so
We like to let him know
Where he can go

[Chorus]
To hell with the devil
To hell with the devil

When things are going wrong
You know who to blame
He will always live
Up to his name

He’s never been the answer
There’s a better way
We are here to rock you
And to say…

[Repeat Chorus]

WORDS OF WISDOM

Jonah Chapter 3 (Message Bible)

Maybe God Will Change His Mind

1-2 Next, God spoke to Jonah a second time: “Up on your feet and on your way to the big city of Nineveh! Preach to them. They’re in a bad way and I can’t ignore it any longer.” 3 This time Jonah started off straight for Nineveh, obeying God’s orders to the letter.

Nineveh was a big city, very big—it took three days to walk across it.

4 Jonah entered the city, went one day’s walk and preached, “In forty days Nineveh will be smashed.”

5The people of Nineveh listened, and trusted God. They proclaimed a citywide fast and dressed in burlap to show their repentance. Everyone did it—rich and poor, famous and obscure, leaders and followers.

6-9 When the message reached the king of Nineveh, he got up off his throne, threw down his royal robes, dressed in burlap, and sat down in the dirt. Then he issued a public proclamation throughout Nineveh, authorized by him and his leaders: “Not one drop of water, not one bite of food for man, woman, or animal, including your herds and flocks! Dress them all, both people and animals, in burlap, and send up a cry for help to God. Everyone must turn around, turn back from an evil life and the violent ways that stain their hands. Who knows? Maybe God will turn around and change his mind about us, quit being angry with us and let us live!”

10 God saw what they had done, that they had turned away from their evil lives. He did change his mind about them. What he said he would do to them he didn’t do.

Voice of the spirit call
Will you hear the noise
As thousands in a praise fall

See the wide road calling
out for me Oh no
Walk the narrow road
I can hear you when you try,
hear you cry

I need you Oh God
you’re everything to me
I need you deep inside
give me hope take my pride
I need you love from above
God I need you
I need you deep inside
give me hope always my guide

If you speak the word of truth
Power and glory like you never knew
Clean you’ll be free inside
Peace no need to run and hide

Per chorus

WORDS OF WISDOM

Jonah Chapter 2 (The Message Bible)

At the Bottom of the Sea

1-9 Then Jonah prayed to his God from the belly of the fish. He prayed:

“In trouble, deep trouble, I prayed to God.
   He answered me.
From the belly of the grave I cried, ‘Help!’
   You heard my cry.
You threw me into ocean’s depths,
   into a watery grave,
With ocean waves, ocean breakers
   crashing over me.
I said, ‘I’ve been thrown away,
thrown out, out of your sight.
I’ll never again lay eyes
   on your Holy Temple.’
Ocean gripped me by the throat.
The ancient Abyss grabbed me and held tight.
My head was all tangled in seaweed
at the bottom of the sea where the mountains take root.
I was as far down as a body can go,
and the gates were slamming shut behind me forever—
Yet you pulled me up from that grave alive,
   O God, my God!
When my life was slipping away,
   I remembered God,
And my prayer got through to you,
made it all the way to your Holy Temple.
Those who worship hollow gods, god-frauds,
walk away from their only true love.
But I’m worshiping you, God,
   calling out in thanksgiving!
And I’ll do what I promised I’d do!
   Salvation belongs to God!”

10 Then God spoke to the fish, and it vomited up Jonah on the seashore.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Jonah Chapter 1

Running Away from God

1-2 One day long ago, God’s Word came to Jonah, Amittai’s son: “Up on your feet and on your way to the big city of Nineveh! Preach to them. They’re in a bad way and I can’t ignore it any longer.” 3 But Jonah got up and went the other direction to Tarshish, running away from God. He went down to the port of Joppa and found a ship headed for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went on board, joining those going to Tarshish—as far away from God as he could get.

4-6 But God sent a huge storm at sea, the waves towering.

The ship was about to break into pieces. The sailors were terrified. They called out in desperation to their gods. They threw everything they were carrying overboard to lighten the ship. Meanwhile, Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship to take a nap. He was sound asleep. The captain came to him and said, “What’s this? Sleeping! Get up! Pray to your god! Maybe your god will see we’re in trouble and rescue us.”

7 Then the sailors said to one another, “Let’s get to the bottom of this. Let’s draw straws to identify the culprit on this ship who’s responsible for this disaster.”

So they drew straws. Jonah got the short straw.

8 Then they grilled him: “Confess. Why this disaster? What is your work? Where do you come from? What country? What family?”

9 He told them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship God, the God of heaven who made sea and land.”

10 At that, the men were frightened, really frightened, and said, “What on earth have you done!” As Jonah talked, the sailors realized that he was running away from God.

11 They said to him, “What are we going to do with you—to get rid of this storm?” By this time the sea was wild, totally out of control.

12 Jonah said, “Throw me overboard, into the sea. Then the storm will stop. It’s all my fault. I’m the cause of the storm. Get rid of me and you’ll get rid of the storm.”

13 But no. The men tried rowing back to shore. They made no headway. The storm only got worse and worse, wild and raging.

14 Then they prayed to God, “O God! Don’t let us drown because of this man’s life, and don’t blame us for his death. You are God. Do what you think is best.”

15 They took Jonah and threw him overboard. Immediately the sea was quieted down.

16 The sailors were impressed, no longer terrified by the sea, but in awe of God. They worshiped God, offered a sacrifice, and made vows.

17 Then God assigned a huge fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in the fish’s belly three days and nights.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Change is always hard when our attitude isn’t good.www

We can have a victim or victor mentality.

People that change move further in life than those of us that don’t change.

There is a price to pay for being comfortable.

I talk about the book “Who Moved My Cheese” by Spencer Johnson
 51pF-sW0-gL__BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA240_SH20_OU01_
Highly reccomended resource.
available at Amazon, or through itunes in audio.

The basic premise–  be ready to find new cheese when yours runs out.  Listen for details.

Bottom line is:  Change isn’t easy-  it requires us to anticipate, focus and keep a good attitude–

1.  Be open to change
2.  Get a support group
3.  Read some information on change
4.  Embrace change and the benefits from it.

I end the program by playing a really cool song by Rusty West called “Hung out to dry”  you will love it.  I then pray for everyone.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Proverbs 3 in the New Living Translation

Trusting in the Lord

1 My child,[a] never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart.
2 If you do this, you will live many years,
and your life will be satisfying.
3 Never let loyalty and kindness leave you!
Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
Write them deep within your heart.
4 Then you will find favor with both God and people,
and you will earn a good reputation.

 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.

7 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
8 Then you will have healing for your body
      and strength for your bones.

9 Honor the Lordwith your wealth
and with the best part of everything you produce.
10 Then he will fill your barns with grain,
and your vats will overflow with good wine.

11 My child, don’t reject the Lord’s discipline,
and don’t be upset when he corrects you.
12 For the Lord corrects those he loves,
just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.[b]

13 Joyful is the person who finds wisdom,
      the one who gains understanding.
14 For wisdom is more profitable than silver,
and her wages are better than gold.
 15 Wisdom is more precious than rubies;
nothing you desire can compare with her.
16 She offers you long life in her right hand,
and riches and honor in her left.
 17 She will guide you down delightful paths;
      all her ways are satisfying.
 18 Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her;
happy are those who hold her tightly.

 19 By wisdom the Lordfounded the earth;
by understanding he created the heavens.
20By his knowledge the deep fountains of the earth burst forth,
and the dew settles beneath the night sky.

21 My child, don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment.
      Hang on to them,
22 for they will refresh your soul.
They are like jewels on a necklace.
23 They keep you safe on your way,
and your feet will not stumble.
 24 You can go to bed without fear;
you will lie down and sleep soundly.
25 You need not be afraid of sudden disaster
or the destruction that comes upon the wicked,
26 for the Lord is your security.
He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.

27 Do not withhold good from those who deserve it
when it’s in your power to help them.
28 If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say,
“Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”

29 Don’t plot harm against your neighbor,
for those who live nearby trust you.
 30 Don’t pick a fight without reason,
when no one has done you harm.

 31 Don’t envy violent people
      or copy their ways.
32 Such wicked people are detestable to the Lord,
but he offers his friendship to the godly.

33 The Lord curses the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the home of the upright.

34 The Lord mocks the mockers
but is gracious to the humble.[c]

 35 The wise inherit honor,
but fools are put to shame!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
I read a comment from a listener about last week’s show.

Today my wife Amy joins me in talking about recovering from traumatic experiences.  After going through some pretty tough times in different churches and jobs, Amy and I have some good advice for getting over disappointing circumstances.  There is hope after devastation.  Hang on, this could really help you!

Here are some of the things that helped us to move on with life.

  • Keep eyes on Jesus not on men or women
  • Never underestimate intuition
  • If it feels uncomfortable, it probably is.
  • Never follow blindly- ask questions but don’t be critical
  • Feelings fade over time
  • Trust is earned not just given

This is a very important podcast to listen to.  Tell a friend about it and start on the road to healing from going through tough circumstances.

Next week I am going to talk about how to deal with change in our lives.  It’s called CH CH CH CHANGES!  It’s going to rock!

Again, thanks for listening: here is the direct download:  http://www.takehimwithyou.com/podcast/080209recovering.mp3
